Personally, I have heard very little about the Ridge Racer series. She somehow historically avoided the PC, and on consoles regularly there was something better. However, when the creators of the magnificent FlatOut, instead of announcing the third part of their crash-smash simulator, announced that they were busy developing the Ridge Racer Unbounded , a first shadow of doubt flashed. Then the trailers appeared, and it turned out that Flat was again being done at Bugbear , only this time exclusively in urban scenery. Did something good come out of this - read below.

The main problem of the game is identified already in the first round of the first race. Rather, even on the first corner. And the name of this problem is management. And this is actually strange, if we recall that in all previous projects of the studio there were no problems with this. The physical model of the behavior of various vehicles was well developed. Here, in some unknown way, it turned out that it was equally inconvenient to control both from the gamepad and from the keyboard.

Additional problems are also caused by the love of drifting, inherited from past parts, which, as before, looks very, very strange. At the entrance to the turn, the car feels like welded to the road surface, but at a certain moment it simply breaks down into some weakly controlled drift, and after a couple of moments the pilot feels the blow from a collision with something monumental.

Collisions are another manifestation of the physical model, causing complete bewilderment. Firstly, cars from them practically do not receive visible damage. A car, ready to explode at any moment from a blow of the wind, looks exactly the same as it started a couple of seconds ago. No solid dents, no hefty scratches, no smoke - none of this. It is amazing to see such a hack after the FlatOut series with its juicy disintegrating sobs.

As a result, a situation regularly arises when you are driving yourself in the first place, but here a few meters before the finish someone catches up with you, barely hurts the rear bumper, and voila! - accident, sparks, spare parts in all directions. Just Burnout .

But this is not so bad. The complete misfortune lies in the fact that the scenery is assembled at best from foam rubber or something like that. The feeling that you have just demolished a stone column or brickwork does not arise even once - the four-wheeled iron sluggishly reacts to a collision and continues to calmly glide to the finish line. Yes, in Lego Racers, the blows felt more realistic than here!

The business could save everything else - a variety of tracks, modes, fireballs, extravaganza of colors on the screen and other minor joys. But, regrettably, there are certain difficulties with all this.

Graphics, for example, are not much different from the same FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage. Not that the latter looks ugly, but over the past four-plus years we have seen many races and are more sympathetic. In addition, in terms of design, tracks from Unbounded are much inferior to tracks from previous Bugbear creations . Instead of boring villages, supermarkets and canyons that set us up for reckless fun, we were bored with boring urban locations. Sadly. The only rainbow moment is the notorious cinematic slo-mo, cut in an accident. Here the camera chooses spectacular angles, and special effects are pleasing to the eye.

Nevertheless, very soon it becomes boring, because cars die often enough, but at the same time they all look the same. The differences are extremely arbitrary, and the means of transportation themselves - the cat burst into tears.

In one of the modes it will happen to ride a tractor - here it is quite different from the rest. However, this is more like an exception to the rule. Actually, the modes themselves are also not as many as we would like, and nothing incredible among them is not hiding.

And so - in everything. The music that was always on top in past Bugbear games friv1000games.org, this time ... Let's just say it makes you want to turn yourself off and put something on your own. The editor, where you can rivet the same type of city tracks yourself, is also difficult to call dignity. At least with my fellow TrackManiathe local map builder cannot stand absolutely no comparison.

By the way, the main feature of the game, related to cutting through alternative paths on the track, actually only rewards a couple of beautiful flights. It is more useful to spend nitrous oxide on banal acceleration. And in Split / Second , where there was already a similar idea, the destruction is implemented much more extensively.

Ridge Racer Unbounded leaves behind only bewilderment. How this could be done by the people responsible for creating FlatOut is incomprehensible to the mind. Especially when you take into account the fact that the RRU clearly loses last year's Insane 2 . There, the music is more pleasant, and the gameplay is more dynamic, and the scenery is more diverse, and there are enough modes. But the game was never done by experts and masters of the genre.

Pros: original interface; funny localization.
Cons: iron-like physical model; meager musical accompaniment; monotonous tracks.
